Painted pottery

In 2019, I took a pottery class in the evenings at a local pottery co-op studio, Clayspace. This awesome organization offers membership for experienced potters and classes for students and beginners.

As a complete beginner, and signed up for a wheel-throwing class with my (now) husband. We had a lot of hands-on instruction, but pottery is hard! By the end, I was still very much a beginner. I had come a long way though: I could throw bowls and basic pots, and the occasional vase. Trimming the pots was also a challenge for me. During trimming, you refine the pots and often add a foot with carving tools. My pots often turned out a bit lopsided, and too heavy on the bottom.

My favorite part of the whole process was glazing. While others did simple dips into glaze, I would spend hours painting my pots. Then the pots are fired in a kiln so that the glaze is permanent. I was always excited to see how they would turn out.

Here are some of my creations. Their wonkiness makes me smile. I hope one day I can get back to pottery. It is a lot of fun.
