What to Do if You’re in a Fog

go-bravely-fog.jpg

I’m writing this from within a deep fog.

Everything is engulfed in a cool white. I cannot see the way forward, or anything at all.

I have been surrounded by mist for what feels like a long time.

Maybe it hasn’t been that long. It’s funny, in a fog, you become uncertain about basically everything.

This is my first blog post. What exactly am I doing? And why? Where will it lead? How should I write the posts? Shouldn’t they be in a specific order?

I rewrote this entire post from scratch.

As I write, the fog is starting to dissipate. It appears that the fog responds to action rather than standing still. Based on my observations, I’ve written out the instructions, in case you, too, find yourself in a foggy situation.

Some ways to know you are in a fog:

  • You are no longer certain which way to go.

  • You can’t see more than one step ahead; everything else has faded away.

  • Every way looks promising or unsettling.

  • You don’t feel confident in yourself and your journey any more.

Are you in a fog too?

If you stay too long, you become used to not making any progress, used to being lost. And the confusion becomes comfortable. More comfortable than clear skies. And that is what is dangerous.

How to Get Out of a Fog

  • Pick one direction and do not change that decision.

  • Keep taking one step at a time forward.

  • Only focus on the next step. Avoid looking around or behind you, as this may cause you to lose your way.

  • Remember that this is only temporary and believe that you will make it out soon.

If you keep going the fog will eventually fade and you have made it out into new surroundings. Then you can continue your journey with renewed confidence.
