Leaving the Comforts of Home
I’ve just begun my new journey, but I have to say that am very, very tempted to turn around and return home.
I have been dragging my feet as I face the first set of challenges. I have been thinking that I need to go back and prepare some more, do more research, or even just play video games all day long and, you know…never leave my comfort zone again.
But all of those are just excuses to hold me back from doing the work.
My brain is programmed to keep me alive, and thus keeps offering up ‘reasons’ to play it safe. Starting out on a new adventure (even a metaphorical one) seems threatening and dangerous. It is tough to put yourself out there and be vulnerable.

When you are starting a journey, one of the hardest things is leaving home…and then staying out there on the road.
Rest is a crucial part of any journey. But if you are resting too much, you may be back at home.
Home is your comfort zone. Home is procrastination, Netflix, internet scrolling, and video games. Home is wanting to stay a child forever. Home is spending all your time in comfort-seeking activities. Staying at home keeps you safe, but also keeps you from your potential.
Sometimes, home is the best place you can be. We need the comfort and rest of home during certain times of our lives, such as in recovery from an illness or other ordeal.
But often, we remain at home too long, and it keeps us from reaching our goals. The truth is, we are like birds who eventually need to leave the nest in order to become who we’re meant to be.
When I think of home, I think of the Shire in Lord of the Rings. When Frodo Baggins and his hobbit friends left the Shire, they quickly learned that life was rougher outside. The hobbits were used to a leisurely seven meals a day, but discovered that when on an important quest, there were no second breakfasts, elevenses, or afternoon teas. However, they adapted to the road and found the strength to keep going anyway. All of them went on an amazing journey and came back forever changed.
Right now, are you at home and avoiding your journey?
If you are, know that you aren’t alone. We are programmed to seek comfort and safety. Be kind to yourself. And when you feel ready to start your journey, take some time to make preparations, and meet me out there on the trail.
